Where To Start
The first and foremost step is to identify and measure the space that you are going to set aside for the desk. Ensure that you are certain of the measurements and don’t forget to account for things such as the drawers, drawer faces and any internal support boards. Then, make a note of the exact measurements of wood that you need as well as the number of drawers that you want. Once you have done this, then it is off to your local building supply company to start pricing the measurements of wood you will need, runners for the drawers, drawer handles and any of the other tools or parts listed above that you may not already have.

Getting Started

Your basic desk is going to have three solid sides and a solid top, with a set of drawers on either side or even on just one side. To achieve this simple design, you are going to have to join the 2 supporting side to the middle section and once done, attach the desktop to these supports. You can choose to put the middle support at the back of the desk or in the middle, yet bear in mind, the placement of this will affect the size of the drawers you can include. Measure exactly where you want to put the joining plates, mark the locations with a pencil and then drill the holes before putting the pieces together. Once complete, you can then attach the two side pieces to the middle piece and put the actual desk top in place.

Building The Drawers

The easiest way to build and attach the drawers is to make a box that is slightly larger than the drawers themselves, and attach this to the desk using the joining plates. Then, you need to attach the runners to the inside of this box. Once done, you need to put together the drawers using wood screws and attach the wheels of the runners to the outside of the drawers. Remember to attach the handles and allow everything to dry.

The Finished Product

Once the glue has dried, you can apply the veneer tape to the surfaces you wish to have covered and gently run over it with the electric iron on a low heat setting. Once completed, you are then ready to use your brand new, custom-built office desk.
