Standing Desk

When building a desk many people don’t consider a standing desk.  However, for people who work at their computers day in and day out a standing desk is definitely something to consider.  Sitting down all day has a lot more wear and tear on your body than you think.  Your back, wrists, and neck can start to sustain permanent injuries from lack of use and awkward positions.

There’s also another reason to build this type of desk and that is weight loss.  You may not realize it, but if you’re standing, you’re burning far more calories than if you sit down all day.  Along with burning calories, you’re also strengthening your back and leg muscles which prevents cramping and other aches and pains.

Building a standing desk is actually pretty simple to accomplish.  It’s also far more inexpensive than purchasing one from the store.  Amazon sells kits that cost hundreds of dollars, while you can easily make your own for under $100.

Materials You’ll Need:

You have a few options with this design. If you’re not ready to make the commitment or if you’re planning on going mobile with your new setup you can purchase a few materials at your local hardware store.

  • Lack side table – this is extremely inexpensive and comes in a variety of colors.
  • Two Ekby Valter brackets. Again, very inexpensive and there are multiple colors to select from as well as finishes.
  • Twist ties.
  • Screwdriver.
  • Eight screws. You can use 1.5 inch long flat head screws but make sure to purchase a few different lengths; both larger and smaller just in case. Again, they’re cheap so you can always use them later.

How to Assemble:

  • Assemble the side table according to the instructions.
  • Place this table on top of your existing desk.
  • Your table height should be at or just below the height of your elbows for a comfortable workstation.
  • Measure your distance to apply your brackets. You can use twist ties to stack them on something about the height of a ream of paper.
  • Screw your brackets into the legs of your lack side table.
  • Place the shelf on top of the brackets. You can choose to screw them in or not the choice is yours.
